Weekend in Santa Marta

28 May

I know most of my last posts have been kind of depressing, just talking about crime and my bad luck.  So I decided to talk about my weekend which was a really nice one.

The Colombo (where I work) takes all teachers on a trip to Irotama in Santa Marta to spend a day there and enjoy the sun, the beach and the good food.  Irotama is a really nice 5 star hotel and everyone had an awesome time there.  To get there, the school rented these really comfortable buses. During the bus ride some were listening to music, others were talking and telling jokes. But EVERYONE was taking pictures. Including me, even though I was trying hard to fight back nausea. I get motion sickness, you know.

When we got there, I was welcomed with a whisky shot by one of my coworkers. He said it would make me feel better but it didn’t. Instead I was all shaky and everyone was making fun of my shivery hand every time I took a picture.  So once everybody had settled in, it was picture time! I took a bunch myself too. Some funny ones of my coworkers and me and others of the landscape.  I promise I will post them on Flickr for you to see them.

The buffet style lunch was awesome. The food was really good, but after I ate I was so full, all I wanted to do was sleep. Some of us dozed off for a bit after lunch and then we hung out in the sun until it was time to leave.

Me and two of my friends decided it was not time for the fun to end. So we decided to stay in Santa Marta for the rest of the weekend. We took a taxi to El Rodadero and then walked along the beach, looking for a nice hotel. After walking for a half hour, we found a small but clean place to stay. We went out dining and walking that night and I slept so well after we got back to the room. I think it was the AC. LOL

The next day we got up early to hit the beach and we worked really hard on getting a nice tan.  We had a nice lunch at the beach, the usual fried fish with tostones, coconut rice and salad.  After lunch, we went back to the hotel, showered and got ready to go back home. The ride back home was a little hot. No comfortable buses this time.  But I slept through most of it. When I finally got home I was so tired, I just crashed after taking yet another shower.

So as you can see, my weekend was pretty cool. I especially enjoyed  the company of my friends and being in another city, seeing different streets and different people. I have to confess I was a little paranoid walking the streets of El rodadero at night with my camera, but everyone kept telling me, “relax, you’re not in Barranquilla”. I guess the crime wave of my city has really affected me. I hope my paranoia doesn’t last forever. 🙂

Think I’m paranoid?

22 May

You’d think I’m paranoid but lately I’ve been considering getting either a Swiss knife, pepper spray or Taser gun. Crime has been stalking me in the last couple of days. As you very well know, I was mugged last week. This past Tuesday night, a laptop was stolen from one of the classrooms at the Institute where I work. Another teacher and I were deceived by a robber who brazenly entered the room and asked us to leave as he had to charge the AC with some toxic gas. I’m pretty sure he must have had some “inside” help. Otherwise, how could he have known the AC was not working that night? I don’t want to make any accusations, but whatever!

Even though it was not MY laptop that was stolen, I still feel ROBBED. How could we have been so gullible? How could that guy have fooled us like that? If he was going to handle toxic gas, how come he was not wearing a mask? How come we weren’t notified of this by the Academic Office? How come I didn’t ask myself these questions then, before it was too late? My boss said it could have happened to anybody but I can’t help feeling stupid about the whole thing.

Anyways, yesterday one of my coworkers was mugged too. Two guys on a motorcycle followed him after work and stopped him while he was in his car at a traffic light and pulled a gun on him and especifically asked for his watch. His really expensive Invicta watch. This is so weird because usually those muggers on motorcycles just ask you to give them your wallet or cell. But they asked for his watch, so how on earth did they know he usually wears a fancy pricey watch? Coincidence? I don’t think so. Luckily he wasn’t wearing it that day.

So that is why I have been really paranoid lately and I have asking myself if I should get something for self-defense. I was thinking a Swiss Army knife but a really smart person advised me not to get one as it could be used against me and being as clumsy as I am, I’m sure it’s very likely to be that way. Pepper spray does not seem to be as effective as a Taser gun, but I heard those are hard to come by.

One thing is for sure, though. I am not too sure I want to continue living in Barranquilla anymore.

Living in the safe city of Barranquilla

13 May

This guy from Texas I used to know told me once that he felt safer living in Barranquilla than he ever did in Houston. Bah!  Living in Barranquilla is as dangerous as living in any other overpopulated city around the world. Even more dangerous I’d dare say because this is the only place where they mug you in the middle of the day right in front of your house.

Every time I go to the south part of the city I always worry about being robbed. Not once have I been robbed there.  All the three times I’ve been mugged,  it’s been in front of my house. And twice I’ve had people rob stuff through my window! Is this some kind of karma or what? Will I always live surrounded by thieves and muggers?

All this rage against robbery and mugging comes obviously from the fact that I was mugged recently. Very recently. This morning to be precise. The guy took my crappy old cell phone, my MP3 player and my gold necklace. Luckily, he didn’t take my wallet which is way more valuable. I guess losing your stuff is a real pain, but trying to get them back is even worse. Like going to the police station to file a report in order to get my old number back from Tigo.

Okay I’m going to stop being pissed now and go to bed because I have to wake up early in the morning.

Another Friday night, another week

9 May

Hey there everybody! (Or should I say: Hello 6 people who read my blog) Maybe I should paste the link to this on my FB status. 😉barranquilla

Today is Friday night and I suddenly find myself in a foul mood. It’s too early for PMS so I’m thinking something must have happened during my day to set off my crankiness. Anyways, I have no real purpose for writing this entry. LOL. Why should everything have a purpose or a reason? That’s a bit of a contradiction considering the name of this blog.

I was speaking to a coworker today and I was telling her that I had decided having my students start their own blog as their final project on my advanced writing class. I remembered then that my last post had been last month. I am not even writing on a weekly basis.  What a way to set the example!!!

So here am I, trying to write a decent post. And honestly I don’t think I am doing so well.

I solemnly promise that I will write at least once a week from now on. Instead of overthinking things and complaining about the everyday problems to my poor friends and family, I will vent here.  Maybe advertising on FB is not such a good idea. 🙂

So this is all the writing I am going to do tonight, even though I feel so inspired right now I think I could write a book. But the thing is I have to prepare my classes for tomorrow. I always do it in the morning, but I have to run some errands on Saturday morning.

So I hope you have a nice weekend. And to quote a guy I knew, have a nice evening ya’ll.
